Discover the lesser-known story of Bled and its textile heritage.
When you think of Bled, what comes to mind is the enchanting Lake Bled with its islet and church, Bled Castle, and the magnificent Alpine landscape. However, there is a story woven into the place that still means a great deal to the local population today and has played a big part in the development of the town.
For decades, the Vezenine Bled factory has been a link between many residents of Bled and the surrounding area, and its story can be seen in a permanent exhibition at the Vezenine Bled Intergenerational Centre.
The origins of the manufacture of machine-made embroidery and lace go back to the 1920s, when 2 separate plants of this industry after WWII merged into a common story and became the Vezenine Bled factory. What followed are decades when the factory was the only Slovenian company of its kind, and at the same time one of the leading manufacturers of machine-made embroidery on the Yugoslav market.
At the exhibition you will learn about the development of manufacture, the work of the employees and see a variety of products, from laces and embroidery to ribbons, appliqué and decorative textiles. Particularly interesting is the insight into the early period, when manufacturing, despite the use of machines, was still very much handmade.
Learn how this unique cultural heritage shaped the local population and expressed the creativity and advancement of the people of the Gorenjska region until 2005, when the factory closed.
In addition to the permanent exhibition on the Vezenine Bled factory in the Vezenine Bled Intergenerational Centre, you can find part of the legacy of Vezenine Bled also in the Gorenjska Museum, which can be visited at Tomšičeva Street 42 in Kranj.
