Church of St George

At the Church of St George, you can view the beautiful frescoes and an antique bell.

The parish Church of St George in Zgornje Gorje was built in the second half of the 15th century and rebuilt as well as enlarged several times. The Renaissance presbytery has a preserved primary Gothic core with original frescoes. In the 17th century, the church was rebuilt in Baroque style, a bell tower was added, in 1894, the church was renovated in Romanesque and Renaissance style. Frescoes and paintings in the church were created by Slovenian artists Matija Koželj, Janez Šubic and Leopold Layer.

The special feature of the church is the bronze bell which is more than 150 years old and hangs in the Baroque bell tower.

Every year, the traditional "Jurijev semenj" (George's Fair) takes place at the end of April. St George was the protector of horses; therefore, horse blessing also takes place at the fair every year.
