Bled and Bohinj Connected by One of Slovenia’s Most Scenic Cycling Routes

The Gorenjska region is today richer for one of Slovenia’s most important new cycling connections. With an official opening ceremony, the new cycling route between Bled and Bohinjska Bistrica was opened to the public, marking an important step towards safer and more sustainable mobility while further strengthening the connection between two of Slovenia’s most iconic tourist destinations.
The new route between Bled and Bohinjska Bistrica is approximately 20 kilometres long. Together with the existing cycling path leading to Lake Bohinj, it creates an almost 28-kilometre-long continuous cycling connection between Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Most of the route is separated from motor traffic and runs alongside the Sava Bohinjka River, passing through one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Slovenia.
The project forms part of the national and Gorenjska cycling network and makes an important contribution to the development of sustainable mobility. In addition to improving road safety, it provides local residents with better opportunities for everyday travel and recreation, while allowing visitors to experience Bled, Bohinj and the Sava Bohinjka Valley in an environmentally friendly way.
The opening takes place during the world’s biggest cycling spectacle, making the new connection a symbolic confirmation of Gorenjska’s commitment to promoting cycling not only as a sport and recreational activity, but also as a safe and sustainable means of transport.

The result of years of cooperation
Construction of the project, which began in 2022, represents an investment of almost €25 million. It was jointly carried out by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency and the Municipalities of Bled and Bohinj. The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development, the Regional Development Agency of Gorenjska – BSC Kranj, and other partners also contributed to its preparation and implementation.
The Republic of Slovenia, the European Regional Development Fund, and the Municipalities of Bled and Bohinj financed the project.
As part of the project, two cycling rest areas were also established – at the St. Hema ironworks site and at the Grmečica waterfall. These were financed through the Interreg Italy–Slovenia ADRIONCYCLETOUR project and by the Municipality of Bohinj. A smart cycling station near Lake Bled is planned for the future.
Although the local road between Bohinjska Bela and Obrne is temporarily closed due to landslide remediation works, a diversion route has been arranged for cyclists. Once the works are completed, expected by the end of August, the new cycling connection will provide a fully safe and uninterrupted cycling route between Bled and Bohinjska Bistrica.
Until traffic is restored, cyclists are advised to use the marked diversion route and follow the installed traffic signs and road safety regulations.
The new cycling connection represents an important achievement for residents, visitors and the development of sustainable mobility in Gorenjska. It opens a new chapter in safe cycling connections between Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, offering visitors an even more attractive and sustainable way to explore one of Slovenia’s most beautiful regions.
