Lights on the lake

When night falls over Lake Bled, the surface begins to glow – thousands of candles in eggshells gently float across the water. It’s a scene that, over the decades, has become the highlight of Bled’s summer season, drawing both locals and visitors from near and far.

The tradition of floating lights on Lake Bled began in 1972, when the father of Andrej Vidic, then a maintenance worker at the Park Hotel Bled, first released discarded candles and eggshells onto the lake. What started as a simple improvisation has, over the decades, become a cherished part of Bled’s summer festivities. The candles are still made by hand today. The process is overseen by master craftsman Andrej Vidic, who inherited the tradition and refined it with technical precision. The first step is crucial: the eggshells must be opened without breaking. This stage has, for several years now, been carried out by the event's partner, the company Conditus, which collects suitable shells as part of its confectionery production.

Once the shells are dried, a meticulous process begins – each one is shaped by hand, filled with wax, fitted with a wick and a match. It’s a craft that demands precision, patience, and experience.

On the day of the event, around 40 local volunteers take to the lake in boats to carefully distribute the floating candles. They must take into account the water currents, the placement and spacing of each candle, all of which contribute to a breathtaking visual effect. Because of the cold water, the flames burn more slowly, creating the illusion of a floating, starry sky.

But the work doesn’t end with the event. The following day, divers inspect the lakebed and remove any remaining materials. This is more than just a technical procedure – it’s a matter of principle, a commitment to the environment that hosts the event.

The Bled candles are not mere folklore decorations. They represent a thoughtfully preserved artisanal practice, with clear methods, handcrafted production, and a deep respect for nature. When they are lit on the lake each evening, they also illuminate a story of perseverance, craftsmanship, and community – the story that allows this magical moment to come alive year after year.
