Bohinj This picturesque valley, approximately 20 km in length, begins in the narrow village of Soteska. In its central part, it is divided into the Upper and the Lower valley (Zgornja and Spodnja Dolina) and ends in Ukanc at the foot of Komnaand the Komarča cliffs. Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia, attracts guests in both summer and winter. In a wider sense, its immediate environment is also a part of Bohinj: the ridge of the Lower Bohinj Range with Črna prst (1844 m), Rodica (1966 m) and Vogel (1922 m), Komna – a high Karst plateau, the valley of the Triglav Lakes and the Fužinarska plateau with its mountains which rise above Lake Bohinj, and the southwestern part of Pokljuka.
In Bohinj you can find peace and quiet, but also many opportunities for entertainment and recreation in all seasons – and, there is no lack of natural and cultural points of interest either. The symbol of Bohinj is Lake Bohinj, with its bridge and the Church of St. John (sv. Janez). On the other side of the lake in Ukranc, the 51 m forked waterfall Savica and the source of the Sava Bohinjka, is definitely worth seeing, you can go up to, either Vogel or, to the 1534 m high Rjava Skala by chair lift, from where you will have a magnificent view of the Julian Alps. In winter your can enjoy skiing on well-kept slopes, and tour skiing is also possible in the neighbouring mountains. In the local villages especially characteristic to this area of the Upper Bohinj Valley, you will be able to see a number of sights from the Mostnica trough and the Alpine Herdsmen’s Museum (+386 4 / 572 30 95) in Stara Fužina, to special hayracks called “toplars” and the Oplen House (+386 4 / 572 35 22), an old preserved home with a black kitchen and authentic furniture, in the village of Studor.
In Bohinjska Bistrica, the administrative centre of Bohinj, you can visit the Tomaž Godec Museum with its archaeological collection, well-preserved leather workshop and collections from World War I and II.
